The Hardest Part is Showing up. Everything Else is Fun and Games

By Matt Skinner, MS – Bull City Fit Coordinator

Maintaining consistent physical activity and nutrition habits can be challenging. Exercises like burpees, pushups, and cardio workouts are not always the most enjoyable activities. Likewise, taking the extra step to prepare a healthy snack requires more effort than grabbing something prepackaged and convenient.

Time, accessibility, convenience, and physical ability often compete against our motivation to live healthier lifestyles. That’s true for most of us—and especially for kids living with obesity. It’s also one of the reasons we started celebrating the simple act of showing up at Bull City Fit.

Each session begins with a group huddle before we move into activities and exercises. After checking that shoes are tied and reminding everyone to stay hydrated, I share an important message:

“Some of the things we’re going to do today might be hard. They might be difficult. They might challenge you. But you’ve already done the hardest part.”

Then I ask, “What’s the hardest part?”

Most of the time, the group responds with a smile:

“Showing up!”

And they’re right.

After that, everything else is fun and games. Easy breezy lemon squeezy.

It’s a lesson that extends far beyond Bull City Fit. Whether it’s work, school, medical appointments, the gym, or any other commitment, showing up is often the hardest part. It’s a habit worth celebrating.

Showing up demonstrates that something is important. It reflects motivation that has been turned into action. It means prioritizing healthier choices even on days when it would be easier to stay home. And every time a participant walks through our doors, they are making a positive investment in their health and well-being.

That’s why we celebrate attendance. On any given day, everyone who is present has already accomplished something meaningful.

They showed up. They made the effort.

And that’s worth recognizing.
